Beyond Stoicism: Ancient Philosophies for Modern Times
January 26 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
This series, in collaboration with Philadelphia Stoa, offers practical strategies for addressing life’s challenges. In this session, Dr. Amjol Shrestha, of Rowan University, leads an exploration of life’s existential questions: fostering community while presenting compelling biographies and enduring insights. Discover how ancient wisdom remains profoundly relevant in the modern world. Copies of Beyond Stoicism: A Guide to the Good Life with Stoics, Skeptics, Epicureans, and Other Ancient Philosophers can be purchased at the event or in advance.
In this first session, we’ll begin by exploring the complexities of modern life through the wisdom of the past, starting with the chapter “Seeking Pleasure with Aristippus.” This introduction to Hellenistic philosophy highlights the Cyrenaic school’s view of pleasure as a fundamental, natural drive. We’ll contrast instinctive, unreflective pleasure-seeking with a more thoughtful approach to managing pleasure in a way that avoids the traps of the “hedonic treadmill.” Join us as we apply these ancient teachings to the challenges we face today.
